ADMISSION REVIEW PROCESS

The normal basis for admission is completion of the credentials that lead to university admission in your country of study. Given McGill’s competitive admission process, applicants from overseas vocational and technical high schools are not normally considered for admission.

Please select your curriculum of study for specific requirements:

Advanced Levels, Advanced Subsidiary, Cambridge Pre-U Examinations, and CAPE

While the minimum requirements are: three A-Levels with predicted and final grades of B, B, C, or better, or two A-level and two AS subjects with grades of B, B, C, C, or better, or B, C, B, B, or better, most programs are more competitive and will require higher grades for GCSEs, AS and A-levels, CAPE, and Cambridge Pre-U. Applicants who present the minimum requirements are not guaranteed admission.

A maximum of 30 credits of advanced standing may be granted for final official results. Details can be found at: www.mcgill.ca/students/transfercredit/prospective/advanced.

  • If completing Upper Form VI, you will be considered on: GCSEs, Form VI grades, AS 1(or modular/unit) results and predicted AL results. If you have completed only lower Form VI with AS and have a minimum of five appropriate GCSE examinations with clearly superior marks, you can be considered for admission on an individual basis.
  • If you are attending a school where it is the policy to sit all examinations at the end of the second year (and not sit for unit/module examinations and/or not claim AS qualifications at the end of AL1), then your school must communicate this information clearly to McGill University, either by letter or in its school profile. If completed, AS results must be submitted.
  • For Caribbean students: CAPE Unit 1 and 2 and CSEC examinations are acceptable in place of AL and GCSE, with minimum grades of I to III.
  • Students with Cambridge Pre-U Principal Subjects: Minimum grade is M3 with not more than one at M3.

All grades are taken into consideration in determining admission, including those of failed or repeated courses.

If admitted, you are expected to maintain your level of academic performance through to the completion of your pre-McGill studies.

A maximum of 30 credits of advanced standing may be granted for final official results.

View prerequisites by program and minimum grades required for admission in 2017.

Canadian High School Diploma

If completing an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, you will be reviewed on McGill's calculation on your "Top 6" courses.

If completing a Canadian High School Diploma from another province, you will be reviewed on McGill's calculation of your "Top 5" courses.

If completing the IB Diploma concurrently with your Ontario or Canadian diploma, you will be reviewed on IB requirements.  Please refer to the appropriate curriculum section.

European Baccalaureate

Applicants will be considered for admission on their high school transcript (including first semester of S7).  While 75% is the minimum expected, most programs are more competitive and will require higher grades.

View prerequisites by program.

If admitted, you are expected to maintain your level of academic performance through to the completion of your pre-McGill studies.

A maximum of 30 credits of advanced standing may be granted for the European Baccalaureate.

French Baccalaureate

Applicants will be considered for admission on their ‘bulletins’ (in French with results on 20) for Première and Terminale or, if already completed, on their final ‘Bac’ results. While a diploma in “premier groupe” with “mention assez bien” is the minimum expected, many programs are more competitive and will require higher grades. The baccalaureat professionnel or technologique is not accepted.

If admitted, you are expected to maintain your level of academic performance through to the completion of your pre-McGill studies.

A maximum of 30 credits of advanced standing may be granted for the French Baccalaureate.

Classes préparatoires aux grandes écoles (CPGE):

McGill has a long history of admitting applicants from France; we are familiar with the structure and grading systems of the French Baccalaureate (FB) and French universities, as well as the Classes préparatoires aux grandes écoles (CPGE). At this time, studies completed in CPGE do not serve as a basis for admission to McGill, even if integrated with a program leading to university credit in France.

Accordingly, McGill applicants who have undertaken CPGE study are evaluated on their FB results. Such applicants should identify themselves as "Applicants from High Schools Outside Canada and the USA - French Baccalaureate" not as "Applicants from Other Universities or Colleges and Second Bachelor Degree Applicants (‘Transfers').

McGill is aware that Bologna reforms have changed the assignment of credit and exemptions for CPGE study at some universities in Europe. We continue to monitor developments in this regard.

International Baccalaureate Diploma

Applicants will be considered for admission on their high school transcript and predicted IB results or, if already completed, on the final IB Diploma results. The Diploma with grades of 5 or better on each Higher and Standard Level subject is the minimum expected for most programs. Many programs are more competitive and will require higher grades.

Note: The Math Studies course is not acceptable for programs where math is a required prerequisite.

If admitted, you are expected to maintain your level of academic performance through to the completion of your pre-McGill studies.

A maximum of 30 credits of advanced standing may be granted for the International Baccalaureate Diploma

China

(PRC) Senior High School Graduation Diploma

Applicants will be considered for admission on their high school transcript (Grades 1, 2 and midyear grade 3) and all available results of the Huikao exams. Note that SAT cannot be used as a substitute for the Huikao/Academic Proficiency Test (APT).

The minimum requirements normally are averages of 85% or higher in each year and in all prerequisite courses. Many programs are more competitive and will require higher grades; applicants who present the minimum requirements are not guaranteed admission.

View prerequisites by program.

Applicants from Chinese provinces where the Huikao is not offered must present additional external information of their academic credentials, such as SATI and SATII scores. If admitted to McGill, you must arrange for your school to send to McGill University an official final transcript of your complete high school record, the graduation certificate, and all final HUIKAO results.

If you write the GAOKAO, you must make arrangements to forward to us the final official results.

If admitted, you are expected to maintain your level of academic performance through to the completion of your pre-McGill studies.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE)

Applicants will be considered for admission on their high school transcript (including mid-year Grade 12) and your predicted HKDSE results or, if already completed, on your final HKDSE rseults and the graduation statement.

The minimum requirements are the four core subjects (Chinese Language, English, Mathematics and Liberal Studies), as well as two or three elective subjects from category A (academic subject) or category C (foreign languages). Subjects from category B (applied learning subjects) cannot be used for admission.

View prerequisites by program.

Predicted and final grades of 3 or better in each subject is the minimum, although most programs are more competitive and will require higher grades. Applicants who present the minimum requirements are not guaranteed admission.

If admitted, you are expected to maintain your level of academic performance through to the completion of your pre-McGill studies.

No advanced standing (credit and/or exemption) is given for HKDSE courses.

India

Higher Secondary School Certificate / All India Senior School Certificate / Indian School Certificate

Applicants will be considered for admission on Class X Board exams (if written), school transcripts for Grade 10, 11 and mid-year 12 or, if already written, on the final Class XII Certificate.

The minimum requirements are an overall average of 60% in each year, as well as in all prerequisite subjects. Most programs are more competitive and require higher grades; applicants who present the minimum requirements are not guaranteed admission.

View prerequisites by program.

If admitted, you are expected to maintain your level of academic performance through to the completion of your pre-McGill studies.

Bologna

McGill welcomes qualified applicants from throughout Europe, including from schools in Bologna signatory countries. Applicants will be considered for admission into McGill degree programs of similar duration as those at comparable, research-intensive universities in Europe. Accordingly, qualified applicants to the faculties of Arts, Education, and Management at McGill, with a Bologna-compliant diploma that leads to a three-year undergraduate program in Europe, will be admissible to a three-year program at McGill. Students in Management will be required to complete additional mathematics coursework.

Degrees for science-based programs (faculties of AES, Engineering, and Science) typically will be longer, due to McGill's specific math and science requirements.  In most cases, these degrees will require completion of the Freshman program. Details can be found at www.mcgill.ca/students/transfercredit/.

Precise admission standards, prerequisites and advanced standing are always subject to the policies of each McGill faculty.

Other high school diplomas

Applicants must have obtained, prior to the start of classes, a recognized, pre-university diploma. Studies in applied programs, or at vocational or technical high schools, are not normally considered for admission

Applicants are reviewed on their high school transcript with particular emphasis on yearly averages and results in prerequisite subjects (prerequisite subjects must have been completed during the last two years of high school).

While the minimum requirements is the equivalent of a B+ average, most programs will have higher requirements.

View prerequisites by program.

If admitted, you are expected to maintain your level of academic performance throughout the completion of your pre-McGill studies.

Students entering the Faculties of Arts or Education with the Bagrut can be granted a maximum of 30 credits advanced standing; 27 credits if entering the Desautels Faculty of Management.
