Is it significant? Uses and applications of statistics in 21st Century Research in Health and Veterinary Sciences Education

The use of statistics is pervasive across different fields of research including Health and Veterinary Sciences Education. The word ‘statistics’ elicits many different reactions. For some, the response to statistics is fear, for others its dislike, and for others it is potential.

The purpose of this seminar is to discuss statistics and its applications in educational research by taking participants through a journey of its history, and foundational concepts. In the seminar, we will critically examine some of the underlying principles in the use of statistics including: null hypothesis testing significance, p-value, and effects size. Additionally, the seminar will stimulate critical appraisal of the uses of statistics and its implications to the development and design of quantitative research studies in Health and Veterinary Sciences Education. Disclaimer: no previous knowledge of statistics is required to fully engage in this seminar!

Participant can expect to reflect on some key ideas and principles that are foundational to the use of statistics in quantitative methodologies and their uses in Health and Veterinary Sciences Education.

CARLOS GOMEZ-GARIBELLO, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and a Faculty Member at the Institute of Health Sciences Education at McGill University.
