Basement of Octagon in Raymond Building Reopens September 11

Published: 11 September 2023

We are glad to inform you that the basement of the Octagon section of the Raymond Building is open again as of Monday, Sept. 11.

Discussions with the Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST) to allow the contractor to resume work on site were resolved satisfactorily. The contractor then proceeded with setting up the second egress that was needed in that area. This egress was required to provide an emergency exit to the users of the spaces located there. All users can return to their workspaces safely as of Sept.11. We regret the inconveniences this prolonged closure has caused.

As mentioned last week, the increased safety protocols put in place last winter due to the detection of asbestos-containing dust outside of the construction zone are being maintained. The construction site has been sealed completely to isolate it from spaces occupied by McGill faculty, students and staff. Facilities Management and Ancillary Services (FMAS) has also hired a full-time construction health and safety officer to undertake regular inspections of the site and verify compliance with all safety protocols.

If you have a concern related to the presence of dust in your workspace that was not present the day before, or of debris or damaged building materials, you can call the Facilities Call Centre (FCC) at 514-398-4555.

For questions related to any construction project, you may contact Acting Building Director youssef.chebli [at] mcgill.ca (Youssef Chebli), who will connect with the relevant project team.
