Excavation work on select areas of lower west field begins June 19

In anticipation of the transformation of the McLennan-Redpath Library Complex, some excavation work will be conducted on select areas of the lower west field adjacent to the McLennan and Redpath Library buildings. The McLennan-Redpath Library buildings are part of a designated heritage site. Standard protocol requires that McGill conduct an archeological excavation before starting any large-scale construction project.
Beginning June 19, and continuing for approximately 2 weeks, archeological excavation work will be carried out on select areas of the lower field next to McLennan and Redpath Library buildings. Arkéos, a Montreal-based archaeological firm will be managing the project. Arkéos specializes in the careful evaluation of sites with respect to archaeology, ethnology, prehistory, and bioarchaeology. The archeological survey will take place in coordination with an Indigenous archeological technician appointed by the Mohawk Council of Kahnawá:ke. From the terrace, you will be able to look down and watch the work of the archeological firm.
Please note that some parts of the lower west field will be inaccessible. The work will be conducted in a quiet and non-disruptive manner to minimize any inconvenience to members of the McGill community. For safety reasons, the areas on the lower field where the excavation will be taking place will be fenced. New grass will be planted in the area after the work is complete to restore the site to its original state.

Début des travaux d’excavation dans les lieux désignés de la partie ouest du champ en contrebas le 19 juin
Des travaux d’excavation auront lieu dans des lieux sélectionnés de la partie ouest du champ en contrebas de la Bibliothèque McLennan-Redpath en préparation de la transformation de l’immeuble qui est assimilé à un site patrimonial. Selon le protocole en usage, l’Université doit se livrer à une excavation archéologique avant tout ouvrage immobilier d’envergure.
À compter du 19 juin, et durant environ deux semaines par la suite, une excavation archéologique sera menée dans des emplacements sélectionnés du champ en contrebas et attenant à la Bibliothèque McLennan-Redpath. Arkéos, firme montréalaise d’archéologie, sera le chargé de projet. Cette firme se spécialise dans l’évaluation minutieuse des sites aux chapitres de l’archéologie, de l’ethnologie, de la préhistoire et de la bioarchéologie. La fouille archéologique aura lieu en coordination avec un technicien en archéologie nommé par le Conseil Mohawk de Kahnawake. Vous pourrez observer les travaux d’Arkéos du haut de la terrasse.
Veuillez prendre note que certaines sections de la partie ouest du champ en contrebas seront inaccessibles. Les travaux se dérouleront dans le calme et n’entraîneront aucune interruption pour réduire au minimum les inconvénients que subira la communauté mcgilloise. Des clôtures seront érigées sur les lieux de l’excavation dans le champ en contrebas à titre de précaution. Au terme des travaux, une nouvelle pelouse sera plantée pour remettre les lieux dans leur état préalable.
