Announcement from Vice-Principal Denis Thérien

Published: 10 December 2008

I am pleased to announce that Ms. Suzanne Smith has been promoted to the position of Director, Animal Compliance Office (ACO) effective December 1, 2008. This position reports directly to the Vice-Principal (RIR) and works closely on a day-to-day basis with Dr. Rima Rozen, Associate Vice-Principal (Research and International Relations), whose mandate includes oversight of the McGill Animal Care and Use Program, on behalf of the Vice-Principal.

Suzanne has risen through the ranks at McGill, working initially as Coordinator of Animal Research, then as Research Ethics Officer (Animal Studies), where she was responsible for reviewing and approving research protocols, and most recently as Assistant Director, ACO.

She has exhibited an unwavering commitment for ensuring that animal care and use is carried out in accordance with the highest standards. This dedication to excellence has earned her the respect of the research community at McGill and its affiliated hospitals, and of the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) - the national peer review agency responsible for setting and maintaining standards for the care and use of animals used in research, teaching and testing throughout Canada. In particular, the CCAC noted Suzanne’s impressive contributions towards the harmonization of animal care and use standards at McGill.

In the role of Director, Suzanne will be responsible for providing leadership and coordination of the administrative, support, monitoring and assessment activities of the McGill Animal Care and Use Program, and for liaising with external agencies.

We are confident that under Suzanne’s leadership the McGill Animal Compliance Office will continue to exemplify the highest national standards in the field.
