Rookie cager nets 24 as Martlets conquer Citadins

MONTREAL – Freshman Anneth Him-Lazarenko of St. Dorothée, Que., scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds as McGill rallied from an early seven-point deficit to surprise visiting UQAM 66-60 in women’s university basketball at Love Competition Hall, Thursday.

Him-Lazarenko, a 5-foot-10 forward, made nine of 14 shots from the field and went 5-for-6 from the foul-line.

Guard Stephanie Bergeron of Montreal added 18 points for the Martlets, who led 31-24 at the half and improved their fourth-place record to 4-7 in the QUBL.

McGill freshman Elise Lepine, a 5-foot-11 forward from Mission, B.C., contributed nine points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

High scoring guard Nathifa Weekes, a senior from Brossard, Que., was held to just four points but contributed six rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.

Irline Noel, also from Montreal, netted 14 points for the third-place Citadins, who fell to 6-5.

McGill shot 42.9 per cent from the field (24/56), 33.3 from three-point range (5/15) and 61.9 from the charity stripe (11/15), compared to UQAM, which shot 35.0, 38.1 and a paltry 50.0 from the line, respectively.

The cross-town rivals meet again at UQAM on Saturday evening.
