Another component of wellness is giving yourself the permission to experience a full range of emotions – this includes both positive and negative emotions. Painful emotions are a natural phenomenon of life. When you try to suppress and bury them under the rug, those emotions tend to multiply. Tal Ben-Shahar focuses on the importance of developing unconditional acceptance for our full range of emotional experiences. For example, you feel the emotion of jealousy, you acknowledge the emotion, and then you choose the appropriate course of action for the emotion that you are feeling. When you give yourself the permission to experience painful emotions, you are subsequently more likely to open yourself up to the experience of positive emotions as well.
