Desautels achieves second consecutive win at PRMIA

Published: 12 April 2017

Congratulations to Desautels undergraduate students: Evan Coulter, Valentyn Litvin, Meagan Prins, and Marina Simonian who won the top prize at the prestigious PRMIA International Risk Management Challenge- marking a second consecutive victory for the Faculty at this competition.

The Desautels team shone at the regional round in February, where they proposed a winning evaluation of the risk management practices of a Portuguese public-transport company, Metro do Porto, which had entered into a debt swap deal in 2007, resulting in high interest payments for the company.

From there, they advanced to compete internationally in the final round, which took place in London, UK on April 7, 2017. The team was awarded the top prize of $10,000 USD for their evaluation of an interest rate hedging policy for an American utility company, Dominion Energy, triumphing over 104 teams of both undergraduate and graduate students from 41 schools across the world.

During the two phases of the competition, the Desautels team benefitted from the guidance and expertise of Professors Patrick Augustin and Sebastien Betermier. In addition, Professor David Schumacher, PhD students Sean Maislin and Evan Zhou, and alumnus and former team member Simon Altman each provided mentorship along the way.

The PRMIA international risk management challenge is the premier case competition on risk management in the world. Learn more.
