Application Process

The PhD in Management Program offers only Fall (September) admission of the same calendar year in which admission is sought. The deadline of January 15 is for all applicants (Canadian and international).

Very important: Do not apply to start the program in winter or summer - applications for winter or summer will be cancelled and the application fee will NOT be refunded.

Applications

Applications for Fall 2024 are now closed.

It is your responsibility to ensure that all supporting documents are uploaded by the JANUARY 15, 2024 deadline. Incomplete files will not be reviewed.

You must upload all your documents with your online application in the Graduate Admission System. No more mail will be directed to the department and referees will be prompted to upload their reference letters. Do NOT mail or fax a copy of the documents that you have already uploaded to your application - doing so will slow down the review of your application.

1. Application Fee

The application fee ($132.90 Canadian) should be remitted in Canadian or in US funds. The online payment must be paid by credit card. The application fee is non-refundable.  Application fees and other charges are listed on the student accounts website.

2. Transcripts

Transcripts from all universities attended are required, including Exchange terms (this also applies to McGill students). For all applicants, the academic records must include: transcripts in the original language with official translations, listing courses and grades for each year of study, as well as confirmation of degree conferrals.  The degree conferral information must appear either on the transcript itself or uploaded as a separate degree/diploma certificate confirming the full name of the degree and the date it was awarded.  These documents must bear the signature of the registrar and the official seal or stamp of the institution. Please check the International Degree Equivalency website for more information regarding your particular country.

3. Letters of Recommendation

Two confidential letters of recommendation must be uploaded by professors who have taught you, preferably in your chosen area of specialization and who can assess your research potential. There is no special format for these letters.  They may be written on letterhead, with a date (no more than 12 months) and signature and then uploaded or typed directly onto the space provided to the referee.  The letters should be specific as to which program the applicant has applied and include information that would aid the admissions committee in making an informed decision; the referee must indicate their position and full contact information at the institution on the letter. It is required that e-reference letters be sent from a valid institutional or corporate e-mail address.  Faxes or copies are not admissible.

4. Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)

The Graduate Management Admission Test is optional but recommended. This examination is administered by Pearson Vue. If you choose to submit your GMAT test scores, please ensure the official test scores are forwarded to PhD in Management Program at McGill University (Institution code 58H-MN-62) directly by Pearson Vue by the January 15 deadline. GMAT tests written in the last five years will be considered valid. For your information, the average GMAT score of admitted candidates in the past five years is 682.

The GRE (General Test) official scores taken within the last five years would be accepted as a substitute for GMAT. The institution code for GRE is 0935 and this examination is administered by ETS. If you wish to submit GRE (General Test) test scores, please send an e-mail to phd.mgmt [at] mcgill.ca (subject: GRE%20test%20scores) advising the program office of this. Please include your full name and McGill ID number in your e-mail.

5. English Proficiency Tests (TOEFL and IELTS)

The language of instruction at McGill University is English. Students must write term papers, examinations and theses in English or in French. Applicants to graduate studies whose mother tongue is not English and who have not completed an undergraduate degree or graduate degree from a recognized institution where English is the language of instruction or from a recognized Canadian institution (anglophone or francophone) must submit documented proof of competency in oral and written English. Official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing Systems) test results must be submitted electronically from the test agency directly to McGill University by the January 15th deadline. Only TOEFL and IELTS tests written in the last two years will be considered valid. The minimum TOEFL score is 600 for the paper-based test, or 100 for the Internet-based test. The computer-based test (CBT) results are not accepted, as ETS no longer reports these results. The TOEFL Institution code is 0935. The IELTS minimum overall band score is 7.0.
