Title: Examining ‘research’ genres: Developing paths to success
Type of submission: Symposium
Chair: Lynn McAlpine
Discussant: Montserrat Castello
Presenters: Kelsey Inouye, Isabelle Skakni, Larissa Yousoubova
Abstract
Learning to successfully communicate research to a range of audiences is a learning challenge for all researchers, regardless of experience. Three perspectives on this challenge are explored:
- PhD student: evolution in research thinking in response to examiner feedback on research proposal and unexpected fieldwork findings (Inouye)
- PhD student and postdoc: emotional relationship with writing influenced by genre (dissertation, article, grant proposal) and authoring modality (solo/co-authoring) (Skakni)
- Experienced Principal Investigator: encompassing concept of feedback suggests success in research funding is intensely interdiscursive, PI-specific, and built over time (Yousoubova)
The final ‘discussion’ will draw in the research and personal experiences of attendees.
