Renewable Resources (PhD)

Program Description

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Renewable Resources offered by the Department of Natural Resource Sciences in the Faculty of Agricultural Environmental Sciences is a research-intensive program that emphasizes rigorous and comprehensive learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in literature review, critical reading, and scientific communication to pursue professional opportunities in academia or industry.

The program has two additional options:

Environment option: offered in collaboration with the Bieler School of Environment, the program considers how various dimensions (scientific, social, legal, ethical) interact to define environment and sustainability issues.

Neotropical Environment option: designed for students looking to focus their research on environmental issues relevant to the Neotropics and Latin American countries.

Unique Program Features

  • Students in the program investigate interdisciplinary aspects of basic and applied environmental sciences;
  • The main research areas of the department include environmental and ecological economics, environmental health and toxicology, forest ecology, fish and fisheries biology, landscape ecology, limnology, micrometeorology, soil science, and wildlife biology;
  • Researchers from McGill and from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) collaborate and provide students (in the Neotropical Environment option) to pursue their core and complementary courses in Panama and complete their research in Latin America.
  • Graduates pursue careers in academia, environmental policy, government agencies, and throughout industry.

University-Level Admission Requirements

  • An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA
  • English-language proficiency
