Downloadable and streaming media

When you are planning your class screenings, you might want to consult the Library's growing collection of downloadable and streaming media:

  • Academic video online (AVON): evideos offered through Alexander Street Press (AVON). More than 70,000 films with subject areas including anthropology, business, counseling, film, health, history, music, and more.
  • Can-Core Academic Video: Can-Core is a core curriculum content platform created by McIntyre Media Inc. for use in Canadian schools. The content is 100% Canadian Produced and has been selected for its strong curriculum fit.
  • Criterion on demand: An online digital library of feature film titles licensed for Canadian viewing. Criterion-on-Demand represents a large number of feature film producers, including, but not limited to: Paramount Pictures, Paramount Vantage, DreamWorks SKG, Mongrel Media, Sony Pictures Classics, Alliance Films, Miramax Films, Warner Brothers, Lionsgate Films, etc. Note: VPN is required for off-campus access.
  • Docuseek:  Sreams independent, social-issue and environmental films to colleges and universities, with over 1400 films from distributors such as Bullfrog Films, Icarus Films, MediaStorm, and others.
  • Films on Demand: Thousands of high quality educational videos that can be integrated into lectures and presentations. To access resources, McGill users need only to create an account using their McGill ID and password.
  • Kanopy: Streaming video service for educational institutions that works directly with filmmakers and film distribution companies to offer documentaries, training films and theatrical releases across diverse subjects and disciplines.
  • McGill OverDrive: eBooks, audiobooks, videos and more. Once on the OverDrive site, click on “Getting Started” to gain access.
  • Medici.tv: A classical music broadcaster with access to videos of concerts, master classes, recitals, etc. of classical music performances from around the world.
  • MET Opera on demand: Hundreds of opera productions from the MET with video streaming productions from the 1970's forward and radio broadcasts from the 1930's forward.
  • Music Online: Classical Performance in Video (Alexander Street): Access videos of over 2000 performances, including operas, dance titles, masterclasses, documentaries, and interviews. Includes titles from music publishers and performing houses such as C Major Entertainment, EuroArts, Opus Arte, Arthaus Musik, CLC Productions, and the BBC
  • Music Online: Opera in Video (Alexander Street): Video streaming resource providing access to more than 200 videos of canonical operas, in addition to interviews and documentaries.
  • National Film Board (NFB): Access all National Film Board of Canada films (access restricted to McGill users).
  • Naxos Video Library: Streaming video library. Includes full-length classical music performances, opera, ballets, live concerts, and documentaries. Note: This database has a limited number of simultaneous users. If you have trouble accessing or receive an error message, please try again later.
