The goal of the MSc program is to prepare students for scientific careers in many areas of microbiology and immunology. Research training focuses on the major topics of research in the department: molecular biology, microbiology and microbial physiology, virology, genetics, immunology, drug design and parasitology. These research programs provide students with training in the latest experimental approaches in molecular and cellular biology applied to important problems in microbiology and immunology.

MIMM Graduate Student Seminars: Fall & Winter

Seminars are held on Thursdays at 10 AM in-person at the DUFF Amphitheater. Check regularly as changes to the schedule are made frequently. MIMM student seminar guidelines are described in detail in our Departmental Handbooks. For MIMM Graduate Students:

  • Attendance at the MIMM Graduate Student Seminars continues to be compulsory for students enrolled in the M.Sc., Fast-Track, and Ph.D programs during both the Fall and Winter terms.
  • Students are permitted to miss only one (1) seminar day per term.
  • Students must complete an online attendance form to confirm their presence at each seminar.
  • To access this form, students will receive a QR code from the seminar facilitator after the final presentation of the day at each seminar.
  • The form also contains a section where students must provide a brief summary of the main insights gained from attending the seminar.

Current Topics - Scientific Seminar Attendance Form

This online form is essential for tracking your participation in any scientific seminars you attend each term.  To ensure you meet the attendance requirements, please use the following link to access the form: https://forms.office.com/r/v7ijJrBYCD

  • To ensure that your seminar attendance is properly recorded, students must also fill out the Seminar Attendance Form (word document) available on the MIMM Department website.
  • A PDF copy of the Seminar Attendance Form should be submitted via email to grad.microimm [at] mcgill.ca by the end of each semester by the following deadlines:
  • Fall 2023 Semester | submission deadline is December 15, 2023
  • Winter 2024 Semester | submission deadline is April 12, 2024

Graduate Student Research Day

The next Research Day will be held on May 2024. Final date will be available towards the end of 2023.

Here is more information on our Graduate Student Research Day in May 2023:

Keynote speaker: 2023
Dr. Jonathan Abraham
Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, Harvard Medical School

Jonathan Abraham is a physician-scientist and obtained a bachelor’s degree in biochemical sciences from Harvard College (2005), a Ph.D. in Biophysics from Harvard University (2010), and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School (2012) as part of the Harvard-MIT M.D.-Ph.D. Program. He then completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases in the Brigham & Women’s Hospital/Massachusetts General Hospital combined program. Funded by a Burroughs Wellcome Career Award for Medical Scientists and an NIH Director’s Early Independence Award, he launched a research laboratory in the Department of Microbiology at Harvard Medical School in 2017. He initially got excited about a career in infectious diseases by reading Laurie Garrett’s “The Coming of the Plague” as a high school student. The book warns us of “newly emerging diseases in a world out of balance.” Jonathan has since spent his research career thinking about how we can better prepare ourselves for outbreaks before they happen. He continues to care for patients as an Infectious Diseases doctor at the Harvard Medical School-Affiliated Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston.
