The phenomenon of artistic migration to Paris: Schulich School of Music hosts International conference

Published: 26 April 2017

The international conference Artistic Migration & Identity: Paris 1870-1940 takes place April 27-29 at the Schulich School of Music.

Coordinated by Professor Steven Huebner and Post-Doctoral Fellow Federico Lazzaro,  the goal of the conference is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the issues related to artistic migration to Paris in this time period.   It seeks to explore the phenomenon of artistic migration to Paris during the Third Republic from an interdisciplinary perspective (music, literature, and the visual arts), offering researchers from different fields the opportunity to compare their case studies and to formulate ideas that transcend their field of specialization. Researchers will give presentations on topics in music, visual arts and literature, and there will be several concerts illustrating this time period.  The conference is made possible in part through the collaboration of Trio Hochelaga, Institute for the Public Life of Arts and Ideas (IPLAI), the Project « Musique et nation dans l’entre-deux-guerres », and the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts.

The  conference, which has been funded through a Connections Grant from SSHRC, will be preceded by a study day on April 26th titled 'Silence is Golden: Surealism at 100 and the Place of Music in its History,'  coordinated by Professors Jeremy Cox and Lloyd Whitsell  to be held in collaboration with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.  Conference keynote speakers will be Ihor Junyk, from Trent University, and Pascal Ory,  from Université Paris 1, Panthéon-Sorbonne.

All conference events, including a conference titled  Musique sans passeport dans le Paris de Chagall taking place on April 28 are free and open to the public.  Complete programming and event listings are available on the conference website.
