Schulich School of Music graduates and students shine at the 2017 Prix d'Europe

Published: 5 June 2017

Many of our students and alumni performed very well at this year's Prix d'Europe competition.  Felix Hong, BMus'16, ArtDip '17, was awarded the 2017 Prix d'Europe grand prize from l'Academie de musique du Québec.  The prize has a cash value of $25,000 and has been awarded every year since 1911.  Felix Hong is a piano student of Professor Ilya Poletaev.  Other Schulich School of Music winners in different categories include Charles-Antoine Fréchette, DMus 2014, who won the Prix d'Europe de composition (Prix Fernand-Lindsay); Antoine Malette-Chénier, harp, Grad Dip'17 - Deuxième prix, Prix Pierre Mantha; Stephanie Morin, flute, BMus'17 - Quatrième prix, Prix de l'Académie;  Elizabeth Skinner, violin, MMus'15, DMus current - Prix Béatrice-Kennedy-Bourbeau; and Félix Marquis, piano, BMus'14, Prix Jean-Paul Sevilla.

The competition aims to encourage young musicians to perfect their art and provides funding to  the winner of the Prix d'Europe to pursue further studies outside of Quebec.  Thanks to the support of many generous sponsors, this competition supports singers and instrumentalists from the ages of 18 to 30 as well as composers from ages 18 to 35.  In addition to the $25,000 Grand Prize,  special awards are given to finalists in each category (voice, keyboard, strings and woodwinds/percussion).  Since 2009, the competition has also offered a biannual composition prize of $10,000, generously donated by the Foundation Père Lindsay.
