Yannick Nézet-Séguin to get honorary doctorate

McGill will present Montreal-born conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin with an honorary degree. The University’s highest honour will be presented to Maestro Nézet-Séguin on May 14, at 3 p.m., at the Maison symphonique de Montréal, 1600 rue Saint-Urbain.
New book by Steven Huebner explains Verdi's craft
Despite being the most-performed operatic composer in the world, there’s a surprising lack of studies written on the style of Giuseppe Verdi’s works — a problem that Prof. Steven Huebner is addressing head-on. Recently, Huebner put out the first book in any language that offers an in-depth analysis of the composer’s musical style in the context of his 23 Italian operas, from Aida to Ernani.
Prof. Julie Cumming honoured for graduate teaching excellence
Professor Julie Cumming, Associate Professor of Music History and Musicology, Interim Dean of the Schulich School of Music, has received the Graduate Faculty Teaching Award (Doctoral-level) 2016-2017 from the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools (NAGS).
Success for two Schulich Vocal Students.
Two Schulich School of Music voice students were winners at the Concours de Musique du Choeur de la Montagne, which took place on April 8, 2017. Baritone William Reed Copeland, BMus'17/MMus'19 received first prize, and soprano Elizabeth Mary Jane Egan BMus'18 received second prize. Both were accompanied by Schulich School of Music Rehearsal coach, pianist Louise Pelletier.

Professor Dominique Labelle was honoured at the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra (PBO) and Chorale's annual Winter Gala, held on March 10, 2017. At the Gala, Labelle premiered a newly commissioned piece which was written for her by Pulitzer Prize winning composer Caroline Shaw.

Schulich graduate students excel at Society for American Music conference
A record number of Schulich School of Music graduate students presented papers and participated in the 43rd Annual Society for American Music (SAM) Annual Conference, which was hosted by McGill University and held in Montreal from March 22-26. The Society for American Music is made up of scholars, performers, and students dedicated to the study, teaching, and creation of the musics of the Americas.

Pianist Zhenni Li wins New York Concert Artists and Associates Competition
On March 11, 2017, Schulich doctoral piano student Zhenni Li, a student of Prof. Stéphane Lemelin, was named winner of the New York Concert Artists and Associates Worldwide Debut Audition. Selected as one of three finalists, out of 165 who applied, Zhenni Li performed the Rachmaninov 3rd Piano Concerto in D minor, Op. 30 with the New York Concert Artists Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Eduard Zilberkant.
