It speaks volumes that Prof. Brian Cherney’s Canadian Music Concert series grew out of a desire to share our nation’s great works with his students. While teaching his course on Canadian Music at Schulich, he came up with an idea to make the compositions in the curriculum more accessible to the class — and this has since become a well-loved yearly tradition.

Harpist Antoine Malette-Chénier wins McGill Concerto Competition
Harpist Antoine Malette-Chénier, a Doctor of Musical Arts student of Jennifer Swartz, has won the McGill Concerto Competition. In the final round, which took place on Tuesday, February 21, Antoine gave a stunning performance of Canadian Composer R. Murray Schafer's Concerto for Harp and Orchestra. He will perform with the McGill Symphony Orchestra during their 2017-18 season.

Schulich Students excel at the Concours d'Art lyrique de la Relève Musicale
The Concours d'Art lyrique de la Relève Musicale was held on February 17, 18 and 19 in Québec City. Three current students were awarded prizes: tenor Jeremy Scinocca, BMus'19 received 1st Prize, tenor Graeme Linton, B.Mus'19 and bass-baritone Reed Copeland, BMus'17 each received 3rd Prize.
Opera McGill celebrates 60 years with a dazzling Fledermaus

As a celebration of the 60 years of Opera McGill, the Schulich School of Music late last month presented a run of Johann Strauss’s Die Fledermaus in the Monument National. The opening was a big success, with a fresh array of voices, exquisite Art-Nouveau sets by Vincent Lefèvre and brilliant costumes by Ginette Grenier.
Grammy Award for Nick Squire
Nick Squire (MMus '08) has received Grammy Award in the category of Best Orchestral Performance for his work as Sound Engineer on the recording of Shostakovich: Under Stalin's Shadow - Symphonies Nos. 5, 8 & 9, recorded by Deutsche Grammophon. The Boston Symphony Orchestra was led by conductor Andris Nelsons.

This year, the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ) marks its 50th anniversary and Schulich students will be playing a major part in the celebrations. Notably, the McGill Symphony Orchestra (MGSO) is set to perform parts of Walter Boudreau’s Berliner Momente under direction of the composer himself on the opening night of the SMCQ’s Montréal/New Musiques Festival 2017.

Montreal is crowned the world's top student city

There’s already plenty to celebrate during Montreal’s 375th anniversary year, and now there’s yet another reason: Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has named Montreal the world’s number-one student city. The global higher education analyst released its fifth annual QS Best Student Cities ranking on February 14, 2017.
Prof. Edward Klorman a 2017 PROSE Award Recipient
Professor Edward Klorman has received the 2017 PROSE Award in the category of Music and the Performing Arts for his book Mozart’s Music of Friends: Social Interplay in the Chamber Works, published by Cambridge University Press. The annual PROSE Awards recognize the very best in professional and scholarly publishing by bringing attention to distinguished books, journals, and electronic content in 53 categories.
