Ideas to Reality: Essential Skills for New McGill Supervisors

“A training program with a twist”

Supervisors’ everyday communications, actions and interactions with their staff have a significant impact on workplace culture, employee engagement and overall organizational performance and wellness. The Essential Skills for New McGill Supervisors program designed by Organizational Development under the umbrella of My Healthy Workplace, aims to build and support the managerial capacity and network of McGill’s New Supervisors.

The Essential Skills Program provides a rich learning experience with an effective hybrid model including Structured Learning Sessions and Learning Circles to tap into fully exploit the power of experiential learning.

The 70:20:10 model developed and tested by researchers confirms that adults tend to learn through the three following types of activities:

  • Experience (70%) learning and developing through their day-to-day tasks, challenges and practice.
  • Exposure (20%) learning and developing with and through others from informal coaching, exploiting personal networks and other collaborative and co-operative actions
  • Education (10%) learning and developing through structured courses and formal training programs

We are excited to be launching a second cohort this summer, this program is open to all those who have been hired into or promoted to a supervisory role since January 2019.

Testimonials from previous attendees:

“I liked the broad range of topics, which touched on many aspects of our day-to-day activities as Supervisors. Enjoyed, the introduction to the various resources available, it also increased our range of networking with cross-departmental contacts. I definitely acquired new tools for my developmental tool belt.”

"I really enjoyed the learning circles, getting a chance to talk with other managers in small groups. I also like the fact that we were always with the same group of people in the courses - it gives you a chance to really get to know people”
