Students who enter the BA degree with 24 or more credits of advanced standing will begin their degree in U1.
Students who enter the BA in U1 are exempt from the Arts Freshman Program and can choose their Major/Minor/Honours programs when registering for their first semester.
Carefully review this section for U1 students, the First Year Guide help as you prepare for your first year in the Bachelor of Arts degree.
As a U1 student, you will also want to consult with your program/Departmental advisors to confirm that you're taking the right courses for the first year of your programs.
Can't remember if you qualify as a U1 student?
- Incoming students entering from CEGEP who have completed a DEC/DCS are automatically given 30 credits of advanced standing, as are students who have completed a French Baccalaureate, a European Baccalaureate, and some Bologna-compliant high school programs.
- Incoming students who completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma or Certificates (IB), Advanced Level (AL), Advanced Placement (AP) exams, may also be U1 students, if they receive at least 24 credits of advanced standing based on their examination results. Tables showing advanced standing credits and specific course exemptions that may be earned from these results can be found here.
- If you have completed university courses at another institution prior to entering McGill, you may also receive advanced standing in your degree. As part of the admissions process, you must submit transcripts from all previous studies. An Admissions Officer will review your record and assign any eligible advanced standing credits as general (TRNS XXX) transfer credit. For information on how to articulate university transfer credits, if necessary, please review the Transfer student section.
