Put Your Best Email Forward

Description:

What makes for an effective email subject line? How many topics should one email include? When should you “Reply All”? Email is the primary means of professional communication at McGill, but it is also a digital tool with its own peculiarities. Despite the significant use of email, even well-intentioned writers may still send messages that readers may interpret as disrespectful. When audience (A) is poorly targeted, purpose (P) and organization (O) are not clear, and style (S) is not considered, misunderstandings may abound. This workshop will introduce you to APOS—a framework to enable you to get your readers’ attention, craft clear requests, direct people to appropriate resources, and succinctly respond to queries. Conventions and recommended practices for sending appropriate and professional emails will also be discussed.
