What course(s) do I need to take?

  1. Ask your professor* or laboratory manager
  2. You can read the information on each individual safety training course (click on the name of the training course below), and then look at the sections “Target Audience” and “Content”
  3. A refresher course (ie. re-taking the course and exam) is required every three years if your laboratory risks have not changed

* Note: your professor may organize a training session for a specific class, so it is best to verify with them first.

WHMIS

  • WHMIS 2015 is required if you work in a lab with chemicals, biological or radioactive materials. This course is also needed if you work with laser equipment or in a workshop or a garage.

Hazardous Waste Disposal Training

  • This course is required if you produce laboratory waste during the course of your work, and/or need access to a waste room.

How do I register for a training course?

The registration method depends on the training course you want to take:

B) Registration for the following courses occurs directly on EHS' website:

C) Radiation Safety - this 7 hour course is only given in-person. Please register for this course using the EHS Safety Training System - In-Person Training. Note that you need to be on campus or connect though the McGill VPN connection to access the Safety Training System. You will receive an email confirming your registration from mylab.ehs [at] mcgill.ca

How can I get training course certification/proof of training?

Once you've passed an online exam in the EHS Safety Training system, your results will be available in your Training Records. If you have issues finding your training records in the EHS Safety Training System, please watch the video on how to access your training records and certificates (including course certificate and summary of safety trainings).

The following courses can be taken online through the EHS Safety Training System - Web Training:

  • WHMIS 2015
  • Hazardous Waste Management
  • Introduction to Biosafety
  • Safe Use of BSCs
  • Laser Safety

Note: Take your time to read and understand the course materials prior to taking an online exam. All the failed results are cumulative and are kept on your Safety Training Personal History Report.

  • Radiation Safety - this 7 hour course is only given in-person. Please register for this course using the EHS Safety Training System - In-Person Training. You will receive an email confirming your registration from mylab.ehs [at] mcgill.ca.

How long is training certification valid for?

Unless otherwise stated, most safety training certification is valid for 3 years.

Refresher safety training (ie. re-taking the course and exam) is mandatory after 3 years of formal training. Please refer to Safety Training Exams for more information.
