About us

The Pharmacology & Therapeutics Green Committee will create in the department a more sustainable environment in which to work and socially interact. It will also welcome and encourage any individual or group efforts to reach these goals so that the community as a whole benefits from their actions.

The Pharmacology & Therapeutics Green Committee is a departmental-based committee of graduate students and staff from the department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics at McGill University. Its aims are to:

  • Reduce waste production by labs, administrative offices and individuals in the department;
  • Encourage eco-friendly behaviours;
  • Raise awareness on sustainable issues.

We believe that we as individuals can decrease our environmental footprint and have a positive impact on environmental issues within our department, McGill University and our community as a whole.

A. Decrease the amount of waste produced by Labs 

  • Provide designated recycling bins to be distributed within the department with the goal of encouraging the recycling of PLASTIC waste from labs (e.g. bottles, pipette tip boxes, packaging, etc.) – coming in the Fall of 2009
  • Identify and advertise companies that:
    1. DO NOT use styrofoam packaging
    2. DO re-use styrofoam packaging
    3. DO offer greener alternatives for both equipment and products commonly used in the department
  • Work towards CONSOLIDATING orders from the same company amongst laboratories in the department – Very long-term goal

B. Make the Department more "GREEN” in general 

  • Reduce STYROFOAM usage at seminars, in addition to departmental events and meetings
  • Create recycling points (social room and near elevators) with divided categories for paper/cardboard AND glass/plastic

C. Encourage Eco-friendly behaviors in the Department and at home

  • Inform the department on where, why, how, and what to recycle.
  • Encourage “re-thinking" the environment - Examples
