Important Travel Considerations

Dear members of the McGill community,

In light of recent headlines and community questions, we would like to remind those planning to travel outside of Canada of important considerations.

Changing political dynamics have given rise to heightened border scrutiny, including for those travelling for academic- or research-related activities. Therefore, we encourage all members of our community to be informed and take precautions if contemplating or preparing for international travel.

Academic or research activities abroad

Recent media coverage has included reports of international students being detained by immigration officials and the abrupt cancellation of academic speaking engagements. These are risks that Canadian-based students and scholars should keep in mind. For those planning academic travels, it may be worth discussing contingency options with unit or faculty leads or with event organizers.

Travelling with electronic devices

Cybersecurity should also be taken seriously prior to leaving Canada. Travellers should be mindful of sensitive or confidential information stored on devices since electronic devices and data may be subject to search by border officials. Information and advice are available on the Government of Canada’s Research Security webpages.

Travel resources

Though McGill’s ability to intervene in foreign situations is limited, the University does provide resources to help individuals make informed decisions:

All travellers should carefully read the Government of Canada’s Travel Advice and Advisories for destination-specific information on safety, security, entry requirements, and health notices.

McGill is committed to maintaining strong international academic partnerships, but we encourage all community members to make informed decisions before they travel.

Sincerely,

Christopher Manfredi

Provost and Executive Vice-President (Academic)
