FAQ

Who is this service for?

We treat a variety of mental health difficulties. Some examples include anxiety, depression, obsessions/compulsions, ADHD, relationship difficulties, eating disorders, severe winter blues, trauma-related anxiety, substance abuse as well as other conditions.

How do I book an appointment?

If you wish to consult one of our psychiatrists, a referral from your family doctor or another physician is necessary; please fax the referral to 514-398-5529. If you have never been seen at Psychiatric Services, you can book an initial consultation with a referral by phone (514-398-6019) or in person (Brown Building, 3600 rue McTavish, West suite 5500, West wing.

Is it confidential?

The information shared is strictly confidential, and is released only with the student's written permission or if required by law, as in the case of child abuse or the immediate threat of harm to self or others.

Can I get a medical note?

Medical notes are written on a case by case basis, however, they will not be given for the following circumstances:

  • As an attestation of the death of a loved one;
  • As a document to support missing a lecture or lab;
  • As a document in support of your request for an extension on an assignment;
  • As an attestation that you experienced a mental health issue in the past;
  • In any instance where the request is not based on a mental health concern or if the crisis has already passed (meaning the student is no longer in need of our service)

What must I bring to my appointment?

You must bring your McGill ID card and a valid Medical Insurance card (provincial or McGill Blue Cross) to each visit. You will be asked to pay for your visit if you do not have a card. Payment can be made by either debit or credit.

What if I can't make my appointment?

Due to the high demand for our services, we have a $20.00 cancellation fee for those who cancel their appointments less than 24 hours beforehand. Students who do not contact us to cancel will be charged $70.00.

Can I still use the clinic?

If you were last registered:

Fall term (September-December) - You can use the clinic until December 31st.
Winter term (January-April) - You can use the clinic until August 31st.
Summer term - You can use the clinic until August 31st.

Why is a referral required to see a Psychiatrist?

Patients are asked to consult with a general practitioner (GP) first; this could be your family doctor or it could be a doctor at a walk-in clinic. If the GP deems necessary, a referral is then made to a psychiatrist (or to another specialist if the problem is non-psychological). Many classes of psychiatric symptoms can also be caused by physical health conditions (ex., hypothyroidism causing depressive symptoms) and can be ruled out before the first visit to a psychiatrist.

Is there anyone else on campus that I can talk to?
