New Associate Graduate Program Director: Dr. Naguib Mechawar

To all faculty and students,

I am very pleased to announce a new academic leadership position beginning September 15, 2012. In collaboration with Dr. Marco Leyton, our current Graduate Program Director, Dr. Naguib Mechawar will be taking on the role as Associate Program Director for the Graduate Program in the Department of Psychiatry.Dr. Mechawar obtained his Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Pathology & Cell Biology from the Université de Montréal and joined our department as an Assistant Professor in 2007. He is a successful researcher, supervisor, and teaches in several different departments. As a cellular neuroanatomist, his main research interest is in identifying the neurochemical and neuroanatomical properties underlying major depression and suicide. He is the Director of the Mood, Anxiety and Impulsivity-Related Theme at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute and Director of the Douglas - Bell Canada Brain Bank. He is the recipient of several awards including the Bell Senior Fellow in Mental Health Award and the FRSQ Chercheur-boursier Junior 2 Salary Award. Dr Mechawar's research is funded by the CFI, CIHR, FRQS, NSERC, and the AFSP. With Dr. Mechawar’s accomplishments as a researcher, teacher and supervisor, we feel very fortunate that he has accepted taking on this is very important function for the department.
