SIS is pleased to announce PhD candidate Mohd Saqib as FRQNT recipient

Published: 11 May 2023

Congratulations to Mohd Saqib, PhD candidate at the School of Information Studies, on receiving the prestigious Fonds de Recherche du Quebec; Nature et Technologies scholarship. The FRQNT scholarship is awarded on basis of research and academic merit.
A brief summary of his research:
In 2030, it is expected that the world will be more on virtual than reality. Therefore, cyber-peace is equally important. Many researchers have proposed to detect malware using intelligent techniques, such as Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) methods with high accuracy and precision. However, we need these AI-based models to be explainable, interpretable, and transparent so that they could be reliable and trustworthy to a malware analyst. A malware analyst needs to know the incorporating features that lead to a particular decision to be able to mitigate and contain the attack later. Moreover, the explanation capability gives insight into the reasons for classification or detection errors. In short, the goal of the proposed research is to expose the "black boxing" of AI-based models in order to increase the reliability of automated security (i.g. Antivirus software).
