Conflicts

When the final exam schedule is published, some students may find they have conflicting exam times or have an exam scheduled on a date that interferes with a religious observance. Consult the list below to see if you qualify for an academic or religious exam conflict. If so, follow the steps to report the conflict.

Note: Travel arrangements do not constitute a conflict. Students should not make travel arrangements based on the tentative exam schedule, as it is subject to change.

Academic conflicts

Do I qualify?

A conflict exists only if you have:

  • Two exams on the same day, at the same time
  • Three exams in one day (morning at 9 a.m., afternoon at 2 p.m., and evening at 6 p.m.)
  • Three consecutive exams in 24 hours as follows:

- One in the afternoon at 2 p.m., one in the evening at 6 p.m. of the same day, and one the following morning at 9 a.m.

- One in the evening at 6 p.m., one the following morning at 9 a.m., and one the following afternoon at 2 p.m.

  • Four exams in two days
  • Five exams in three days

Report a conflict

Students in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Education, Engineering, Management, Music and Religious Studies and the School of Nursing with an academic conflict in the Final Exam Schedule do not need to report it. Once the Final Exam Schedule has been posted, students will be notified via their McGill e-mail address well ahead of the exam period, with details of where and when the rescheduled exams will be written.

If you have an academic conflict and do not receive an e-mail notification from McGill three weeks before the first date of the exam session, please complete a Final Exam Conflict Form and submit it to Service Point at 3415 McTavish Street. Please note that a resolution to the conflict will follow via e-mail before the first date of the exam session.

Students registered in other faculties must report conflicts to their own faculty's Student Affairs Office, even if the courses involved are in one of the above faculties.

Students in the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences must submit a completed conflict form to the Macdonald Campus Student Affairs Office at Laird Hall, room 106.

Note: Students who request an accommodation may be asked to sign a confidentiality form confirming that they will not discuss the exam with anyone until after the regular exam has been written.

Religious accommodations

Do I qualify?

Students may apply for special exam arrangements if one or more of their exams are scheduled on religious holy days, and if such activities conflict with their religious observances. Fo more information, consult McGill's Policy for the Accommodation of Religious Holy Days.

Request an accomodation

Once the Final Exam Schedule has been posted, students in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Education, Engineering, Management and Religious Studies and the School of Nursing who would like to request special exam accommodation because of a religious conflict must complete a Final Exam Conflict Form and submit it to Service Point at 3415 McTavish Street.

Deadline for submission of the form is 4 weeks before exams begin. Once approved, information about arrangements will be emailed to students shortly afterward.

Students in the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences must submit the form to the Macdonald Campus Student Affairs Office at Laird Hall, Room 106.

Note: Students who request an accommodation may be asked to sign a confidentiality form confirming that they will not discuss the exam with anyone until after the regular exam has been written.
