Instructors: Important Polling Updates for Fall 2017

News

Please note the following three important changes to Polling @ McGill (TurningPoint) for the Fall 2017 semester.

Upgrade to TurningPoint 8

There is a new version of TurningPoint. Please uninstall TurningPoint Cloud and download the new TurningPoint 8 by following these steps:

  1. Go to http://www.mcgill.ca/polling/ and click Register your account.
  2. Sign in with your McGill Username and Password.
  3. Download TurningPoint for PC or Mac on the Downloads page after logging in to your account.

There are few functional changes with the transition to TurningPoint 8. Documentation for TurningPoint 8 is available here.

Change in License Process

As of the Fall 2017 semester, there is no need for instructors to request licenses to use Polling @ McGill. You can safely ignore any messages you receive from TurningPoint about expiring licenses.

However, students using the system for the first time will be required to register accounts (for free) in advance of class. Students must follow these instructions to register their accounts:

  1. Go to http://www.mcgill.ca/polling/ and click Register your account.
  2. Sign in with your McGill Username and Password.
  3. Follow the prompts to agree to the terms of use and create your account.

Students must do this before the first time you plan to use polling, so please notify them by email in advance and/or provide them with time in class (5-10 minutes) to complete these necessary steps. We would also recommend including these instructions in your course outline/syllabus. If students created an account last year, their account is already set up and no further action on their part is needed.

To participate once they have registered an account, students should download the TurningPoint app (iOS or Android) or go to http://mcgill.ca/polling and click Join Polling Session. You as the instructor will provide students with a Session ID at the beginning of class.

Your session options for Mobile Responses (formerly ResponseWare) should be set as follows. Once your session options are configured, they do not need to be changed again.

Anonymous Polling

Some of you may have previously used Polling @ McGill to ask questions anonymously. With the revised licensing model, you can run an anonymous polling session by selecting Anonymous from the drop-down list within the TurningPoint tab in PowerPoint, as in the screenshot below:

When you poll anonymously, it is not possible to track student participation.

McGill University is located on land which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg nations. McGill honours, recognizes and respects these nations as the traditional stewards of the lands and waters on which we meet today.
