Mandate and Goals

  1. From Project Start to Completion
Follow research projects from sample preparation, to image acquisition and quantitative analysis through to data interpretation and preparation of figures for publication. At all stages in the process to provide researchers with the expertise and advice they need to perform the highest quality light microscopy research.

  2. Appropriate Technologies
Streamline access and direct researchers to the most appropriate equipment and techniques in advanced light microscopy available at the ABIF to address their specific research questions.

  3. Education
Provide researchers with comprehensive training and education in light microscopy technologies, advanced imaging techniques and software analysis tools.

  4. Image Analysis
Develop a network of image analysis workstations with the latest high end image analysis software packages.

  5. Customization
Develop custom protocols for image acquisition and algorithms and workflows for image analysis giving researchers unique tools to answer complex biological and medically relevant research questions.

  6. Quality Control & Standardization
Ensure all facility equipment is routinely tested and validated for optimal performance. Develop quality control samples, metrics and protocols for benchmarking light microscopy equipment on an international level.

  7. Sustainability
Promote sustainability at McGill university and in the light microscopy community including the promotion of the ABIF developed Mercury Free Microscopy Program (MFM).

  8. State-of-the-Art
To acquire state-of-the-art equipment to provide cutting edge technologies in advanced bioimaging.

  9. Corporate Outreach
Partner with companies to develop both short and in-depth training courses for efficient technology transfer to researchers. Engage in research and development to direct the development and implementation of novel light microscopy technologies and applications.

  10. Highly Qualified Personnel
Provide an environment for undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and researchers at all stages of their career to learn and develop extensive expertise in state-of-the-art bioimaging technologies, quantitative imaging and image processing and analysis.
