Deferral Request Form

This form is to be used by individuals who are newly admitted to an UNDERGRADUATE program at McGill University for the September 2024 session and who wish to request a deferral of up to a maximum of one academic year from the start date of their studies. Current students are required to contact their faculties and GRADUATE students are to consult Slate. Requests must be made using this form no later than August 31, 2024. NOTE: APPLICANTS MUST HAVE FIRST ACCEPTED THEIR OFFER OF ADMISSION AND, IF REGISTERED, DEREGISTER FROM ALL COURSES FOR A DEFERRAL TO BE PROCESSED.

Before you request a deferral, there are several things you should know:

1. Making a request does not guarantee a deferral will be granted. Only after an application has been received and reviewed can a determination be made. Deferrals can only be fully granted once McGill has received final pre-university results and/or a final graduation transcript.

2. Students who are not granted a deferral may either begin their program in their entry term or reapply to McGill for the following year. The latter does not guarantee admission to a program.

3. McGill may refuse a request or revoke a deferral for academic cause; such as a dramatic decline in grades during the final portion of the pre-university program, or a lack of graduation.

4. Participation in post-secondary study at another college or university is prohibited during the deferral period.

5. McGill entrance scholarships are normally carried over with a deferral, but you will need to reapply for any bursaries you may have been granted. Further information can be found here: Entrance scholarships for future undergraduates - McGill University

6. If you have requested a space in residence, it is essential that you contact Residences and Student Housing regarding the cancellation of your reservation for the current year. They can be reached at housing.residences [at] mcgill.ca.

7. You may cancel your September 2024 deferral request at any time up to August 31, 2024 by using the cancelation form. However, cancelling your deferral request or being denied a deferral does not entitle you to a refund of your confirmation deposit. If you withdraw your deferral request you may start your program in the term to which you originally applied and were admitted.

8. Please keep your contact information up to date on Minerva so we can contact you as needed. Kindly include your McGill ID number with all correspondence.
