Benjamin Nothwehr

After completing their BA in Sociology and Gender Studies, Benji is currently enrolled in the Communication Studies Master's program with a concentration in Gender and Women's studies, under the supervision of Dr. Carrie Rentschler. Most interested in scholarship focused on the politics and lived realities of marginalized communities, their research interests broadly include grassroots activism, embodiment, theories of the flesh, and the use of new and self-produced media for coalition building. With these interests in mind, their Master's research will focus on how queer and transgender subjects use self-published zines for activism and community building. Zines allow embodied experiences to be mediated onto the page and foster discursive space that enables shared affect to circulate between creators and audiences as they recount stories of both common and varied experience. Situating much of the historical promise of zines in their ephemeral materiality, Benji’s research aims to explore how zines have adapted to new forms of feminist activism taking place online, especially changes in the creation, distribution, and circulation of zines, as well as audience engagement with the text, the creator, and other readers.
