Joana Joachim

Joana Joachim is currently pursuing a PhD in the Department of Art History and Communication Studies and the Institute for Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies at McGill University working under the supervision of Dr. Charmaine Nelson. Her research interests include Black feminist studies, critical race theory, Black Canadian studies and Canadian slavery studies. Her current work examines representations of Black women in eighteenth and nineteenth century prints, drawings and genre paintings, with a particular focus on the legacies of slavery located in ongoing discrimination against their hair. Over the course of her doctoral studies she has been the recipient of a Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Doctoral Scholarship and multiple awards from Media@McGill.
