Marilou Trahan-Thomassin

Marilou Thomassin completed a DEC in photography at Champlain College and a B.A. at McGill University in art history and education. Recipient of the 2016 “National Student Research Competition” at the National Association of African American Studies and Affiliates, she has participated in international conferences and published her essay "Helen Bannerman and Little Black Sambo (1899): A Legacy of Othering and the Dehumanization of the Black Subject in Canada Through Children's Literature" in 2018. Marilou is the recipient of the Bram Garber Fellowship in Art History (2017), Graduate Research Enhancement and Travel Award (2017), and McConnell Memorial Bursary (2011). Marilou is currently working on her M.A. thesis in art history at McGill University under the supervision of Dr. Charmaine Nelson. Her work focuses on the representation of black children and the visual culture of slavery in New France and early Québec.
