ARIA Spotlight: Amelia Lang

Overview

This summer I worked under the supervision of Professor Hasana Sharp as a research assistant while she worked on her book on Baruch Spinoza. As I assisted her in copyediting, I began to conduct research into the links between Spinoza and Adam Smith’s philosophy. Thanks to generous funding from ARIA and the Research Group on Constitutional Studies, I was able to investigate this link while studying under Dr. Craig Smith of the University of Glasgow for Adam Smith’s tricentennial birthday. From there, the primary focus of my work involved exploring the nexus between the philosophies of Baruch Spinoza and Adam Smith. During the course, we went on field trips to locations significant to Smith’s life, and were guest lectured by several experts on Smith.

The Motivation Behind Pursuing the ARIA Project

My interest in the history of philosophy was what initially propelled me towards this ARIA project. The opportunity to contribute to Professor Sharp's book and simultaneously pursue my own research was a unique chance to expand my intellectual horizons. Beyond my long-standing academic interests in the history of philosophy and political theory, Professor Sharp's work covered topics of increasing popular interest; freedom, domination, and slavery; and did so while engaging with a variety of perspectives and Spinoza's historical context. Since questions of freedom and community have surrounded discourse around Adam Smith, I was thoroughly interested in investigating the intersection between the men's writings, particularly as they are seminal figures in philosophy.

Educational Objectives

At the forefront of my learning objectives was a comprehensive grasp of the philosophical foundations of both Spinoza and Adam Smith. My intention was to explore the congruences and divergences within their ideologies, thereby deepening my understanding of their enduring impact on subsequent thought. Additionally, I aimed to hone my research skills by engaging with primary and secondary sources, enhancing my capacity to construct well-structured arguments, and gain insight into the process of writing an academic book.

Salient Experiences

My involvement in the ARIA project was punctuated by noteworthy experiences. This was my introduction to Spinoza, and being able to engage in-depth with such a fascinating figure was an immensely enjoyeable experience. Beyond that, the immersive exposure to the Scottish Enlightenment, visits to locations pivotal to Adam Smith's life, and interactions with experts in his philosophy enriched my academic journey. For one, the University of Glasgow’s archives allowed us to read and touch the first printed copy of Theory of Moral Sentiments gifted by Smith to his mentor. Another highlight was visiting Smith’s old house, now converted into a museum for Adam Smith.

Navigating Challenges

Navigating intricate philosophical concepts, particularly those of Spinoza, presented initial challenges. Overcoming this required diligent reading, discussions with Professor Sharp, and seeking advice from peers who are well-versed in Spinoza’s works.

ARIA's Influence on my Future Path

The ARIA project has significantly shaped my future trajectory. The exposure to contributing to research, refining critical analysis skills, and collaborating closely with Professor Sharp has fortified my commitment to pursuing an academic career. This immersive experience, weaving historical contexts with contemporary insights, has broadened my scholarly approach, providing a robust foundation for my forthcoming research endeavors.
