The McGill Healthy Brains for Healthy life (HBHL) initiative aims at conducting cutting edge research to deliver implementable, clinically effective outcomes in brain and mental health for Canadian citizens. The NeuroHub project is tasked with the construction of a versatile and flexible neuroinformatics infrastructure to foster collaborative and reproducible neuroscience and translational research. The goal of NeuroHub is to provide the tools and the informatics environment to improve research efficiency and reusability through the dissemination, documentation, and processing of large and complex research datasets.
At the interface of software development, scientific computing and user community, the research software developer will define cutting edge research solutions for scientific data management, metadata handling, the use of computer systems, information flow and architecture, and/or participate in the deployment, security, maintenance and ensure continual monitoring of the platform services and liaise with service providers. The research software developer will report to the Chief Technology Officer or the Principal Investigator and become a part of a dynamic team of developers, scientists and coordinators.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work with the user community of HBHL researchers to understand the needs and the constraints of the research communities and help define the scope and the architecture of the platform.
- Design and develop web-based e-science tools (frontend and/or backend) and platforms to support the needs of the research community. Develop methods to capture, normalize and handle research data and metadata. Participate to the definition and implementation of complex software architecture.
- Design, implement, deploy and distribute research software and large scale middleware e-science platforms to respond to the NeuroHub needs, goals and mission. Engage with the open source development communities.
- Research and analyze new and emerging technology, find solutions to complex research application issues.
- Support and train junior developers. Provide professional expertise, mentor and advise team members on front-end or back-end development technologies and techniques.
- Organize and participate in team code reviews linked to production code deployment and operations and participate at meetings, make recommendations and provide solutions. Work closely in a team-oriented environment to integrate front-end software implements to work seamlessly with middleware and backend IT services.
Education and Experience:
Three (3) years' related experience
Other Qualifying Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge is required in some of the following areas: Linux, Python (or similar language), and Git. Experience with linked data technologies (RDF, Jason-ld, SPARQL). Experience with authentication and authorizations technologies. Experience with complex data visualization. Experience working in team-based software development. Analytical and problem solving skills to arrive at the most efficient solutions. Self-motivated, well organized and able to work individually or as part of a dynamic team. Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to rapidly changing technologies. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with a variety of people with various levels of technological sophistication both inside the department/unit and externally. English and French, spoken and written.
