Position Summary:

The Senior Advisor, Research Data Management positon is based in the Office of the Vice-Principal, Research and Innovation (VP-RI). The position reports to the Director, Strategic Initiatives, and works in close collaboration with the Associate Vice-Principal (Research and Innovation) as well as the Associate Dean, Digital Initiatives, McGill Libraries. The incumbent is responsible for guiding and supporting the development and implementation of a University-wide framework for research data management that will serve faculty members across all research disciplines at McGill. In this role, the incumbent works with key stakeholders across the University and affiliated hospitals to support good governance of research data according to the expectation of sponsors of research, i.e. funding agencies, public and private funders. This includes adhering to the FAIR principles for research data - Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. The incumbent is an experienced professional who is knowledgeable about provincial, national and international research data management policy issues, and is capable of developing and implementing an institutional framework.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with McGill Libraries, McGill IT Services and other key stakeholders across the University and affiliated hospitals, develop a University-wide framework for research data management that is aligned with national and international regulations and best practice such as the FAIR Guiding Principles for scientific data management and stewardship and Open Science.
  • Serve as senior advisor responsible for the planning and developing of a University-wide framework, including assessing the needs for data management processes, infrastructure, training, operations and maintenance.
  • Develop content and tools for information sharing and training in research data management to faculty members, research staff, and trainees in all fields of research and at all levels.
  • Participate in development of information sessions and workshops for researchers.
  • Liaise with data managers based in research groups to ensure consistent development and implementation of the University framework.
  • Develop and maintain an inventory of available resources for data management in order to inform researchers and administrators across the University and affiliated hospitals.
  • Together with other staff within the Research and Innovation sector, develop templates and provide advice and support to researchers to address questions in grant applications by granting agencies about data management plans.
  • Develop a communication strategy that conveys through multiple media formats the University’s commitments, achievements, and duties in relation to data management.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends, at the provincial level, nationally and internationally, in promoting best practices related to research data management and provide deep subject matter expertise related to the topic.
  • Provide ongoing examination and monitoring of practices, policies, and programs to ensure that the established principles are followed within McGill’s research and innovation activities, for both internally and externally funded research.
  • Prepare briefing and presentation material to Senior Administrator (e.g. VP-RI and Dean of Libraries) on the status of the institutional framework and the evolving nature of the expectations by sponsors of research. As needed, participate in leadership meetings and prepare agendas and summaries for circulation.
  • Establish indicators and track metrics for measuring progress and effectiveness of data management initiatives, and implement benchmarking processes to measure progress against set goals.

Education and Experience:

Undergraduate degree

Five (5) year's related experience

Other Qualifying Skills and Abilities:

Graduate degree is an asset. Minimum 5 years experience in research data management, ideally in a senior function with oversight of planning, procedures and systems rather than data handling. Experience in research data management within a higher education environment, ideally in a Canadian university or funding agency. Commitment to improving processes and guidelines; excellent interpersonal and consulting skills. Understanding of national and international guidelines and requirements by research sponsors for research data management. Knowledge of commonly used principles such as FAIR and Open Science. Strong awareness of current trends and literature regarding research data management. Experience working with members of a senior leadership team working on organization-wide committees and collaboratively with multiple stakeholders. Familiarity with the Quebec, Canadian, and international research funding landscape and demonstrated experience in relation to support of academic researchers and academic units in pursuit of sponsored research opportunities. Ability to assess needs, collaborate and deliver practical solutions that drive results. Analytical skills - direct experience in research data handling such as data collection, analysis and development of data sets is an asset. Excellent communication skills, written and verbal; proficiency in both English and French is preferred. Ability to make presentations and develop/compose complex and sensitive documents targeted to multiple audiences. Demonstrated track record of taking initiative, team building and leadership capacity to bring together diverse stakeholders and develop efficient teams, leveraging individual strengths, and overcoming differing points of view. Excellent leadership skills and ability to lead and coach staff as well as to collaborate with and advise senior academic and administrative staff. Must be able to meet tight deadlines and demonstrate a high level of leadership and professionalism in working with a team of people to achieve specific outcomes. A high level of responsiveness and effectiveness in providing outstanding customer support are expected. Tactfulness and sensitivity in dealing with matters subject to confidentiality and privacy considerations.
