To support the psychological wellbeing of McGill students to promote their healthy development and academic success. Counselling uses a multifaceted approach to support students in distress, supporting the resiliency of our student body, and collaborate with our partners on campus to create a healthier learning and working environment. We provide programming and service delivery with a holistic view of the individual that recognizes the diverse contributors to psychological wellbeing and the different ways of conceptualizing healing.
Using the Collaborative Care (Stepped Care) model, performs any/all of the following functions with clients as needed with each individual case:
- Conducts (psychological/emotional) assessments and collaboratively creates wellness plans with students. Utilizes existing low-intensity programs such as on-line therapeutic interventions and self-help materials, workshops, and group therapy. Completes consultation paperwork. Provides follow-up appointments and makes referrals within McGill and the larger community, as appropriate.
- Provides individual therapy or counselling within the collaborative care framework for students experiencing severe to mild psychological distress. Works from a short-term, directive, collaborative, evidence informed model and utilizes strength/resiliency based modalities.
- Plans and conducts group counselling, workshops, and outreach in areas appropriate to the Counselling Service’s mandate and function of treatment and prevention. Assesses the needs of the McGill community and makes recommendations regarding new programs that can fill these gaps. Researches, develops, and implements groups and/or workshops to meet these needs. Collaborates with internal and external partners to ensure coordinated programming and referral pathways.
- Meets with students in crisis. Conducts crisis counselling or makes referrals, as appropriate and required.
- Maintains professional licensure. Responsible for ensuring that practice is up to date and informed by current research. Participates in training opportunities and incorporates current Counselling Services practices into daily routine. Works on special projects, as assigned.
Three (3) years’ related experience.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
Undergraduate degree in a related field is preferred. Master’s degree or Ph.D., an asset. Must be a member of the OPQ or have appropriate Quebec licensure to treat a psychological disorder. Demonstrated ability to make clinical decisions independently. Professionalism, good organizational and interpersonal skills are essential. Must be able to contribute actively to a team. Demonstrated competence working with young adults. Excellent presentation and communication skills. Able to support students from diverse communities drawing upon personal lived experience, formal training and previous work experience. Lived experience with diverse communities is a strong asset. Demonstrated ability to work in a Microsoft environment using Word, PowerPoint, Titanium, PurelyHR, internet search engines and email. English and French, spoken and written.
