Steps & Eligibility

For Students:

  • The student must find 1 or 2 supervisors from different disciplines to encourage interdisciplinary research at the intersection of AI & Society.
  • The student and their supervisor(s) must apply for the McURA together using the McURA Application Form found on this link.
  • The student is expected to invest between 20 to 30 hours of work per week on their research project over the course of 11 to 16 weeks during the summer Semester. The research period ends on August 27th 2024.
  • At the end of the Research Phase, the student and their supervisor(s) are expected to produce a short report, with the student presenting their work to the McCAIS's Leadership Group in the Fall semester. They will be contacted by email with the date, time, location, and further details.

For Supervisors:

  • The supervisor(s) and their student are to apply for the McURA together using the McURA Application Form found on this link.
  • Supervisors are expected to invest a minimum of $3,700.00 towards the $8,700.00 McURA.
  • Supervisors are expected to have a set of clear and detailed expectations for the student's weekly schedule throughout the duration of the research project.

For Students:

  • The student must be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program related to core AI (e.g. computer science, engineering, statistics, etc.) and/or society broadly defined (e.g. health sciences, social sciences, etc.).
  • Preference will be given to students who have not received scholarships for Summer 2024 (e.g. another undergraduate student award at McGill). 
  • In alignment with the commitment of McCAIS to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), exceptional students from minority groups will be prioritized to ensure a diverse and inclusive educational environment.

For Supervisors:

  • The Supervisor(s) must be full-time faculty members.
  • if the research project has two (2) supervisors, they must come from different disciplines of the AI & Society focus of the proposed research project.
  • The Supervisor(s) must contribute a minimum of $3,700.00 towards the $8,700.00 McURA using the Banner Student Aid.
  • The Supervisor(s) can only submit one (1) application.

Selection Criteria:

The Selection Committee will award the McURA to the selected team based on the following criteria:

  • The research project fostering interdisciplinary work on AI's impact on society;
  • The student's research plan and feasibility within the summer deadline of August 27th 2024;
  • The research project's outcome benefiting advancements of AI within Society;
  • The supervisor(s)' mentorship plan for the student.
