What is the place of English in Québec in the wake of Bill 96?
The Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Montréal (CIRM) is pleased to invite you to a discussion on L'anglais en débat au Québec : mythes et cadrages (Presses de l'Université Laval), a book by Virginie Hébert (INRS). This event forms part of the Francofête at McGill University organized by the French Language Center (FLC).
Join us on March 14 at 1:30 p.m. at the Espace Montréal for a discussion with the book's author, Virginie Hébert, and many other panelists. In the first part of this event, Virginie Hébert will introduce her book, followed by a discussion moderated by Julie Sénat. This will allow students learning French at the FLC to interact directly with this author. In the second part of the event, specialists from various disciplines will gather around a round table to debate the historical relationship of Québécers with English, while reporting on contemporary discourses surrounding English as a universal language.
These two exchanges will question the place of English and its teaching in Québec today. In the era of Bill 96, English is being questioned more than ever in Québec’s society, and it is important to continue to reflect on the ways in which it maintains a conflictual relationship with French.
This event will be held in French. Questions are welcome in both French and English.

Pour y voir clair, Virginie Hébert remonte le fil des discours tenus sur l’enseignement de l’anglais au Québec depuis plus d’un siècle. Dépouillant journaux, débats parlementaires, communiqués et rapports, elle trace la genèse des mythes et décrit avec brio les façons dont nous cadrons aujourd’hui nos prises de position pour les rendre légitimes. Chemin faisant, l’autrice montre pourquoi la discussion publique sur l’enseignement de l’anglais est le terrain d’une lutte hautement significative pour l’avenir du Québec.
