With the heightened visibility of gender diversity in our society, parents and caregivers may feel uncertain about how to address these issues with children in their care. This workshop, brought to you by the Office of the Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) and the McGill Family Care Program, will be a safe space for parents and caregivers to grow their knowledge and practices to better include the realities of transgender, gender nonconforming, and gender creative people. Participants will walk away with a better understanding of terminology, the vastness of gender diversity experienced by youth and adults, and some collectively-identified steps to integrate this knowledge into inclusive parenting and caregiving practices.

Workshop facilitatators:

Eve Parker Finley has worked in Equity in higher education for 5 years. In her current role as an Equity Facilitator with the Office of the Dean of Students, Eve manages a workshop program that holds spaces for students at McGill to learn more about and discuss issues related to sexuality, gender identity, race, consent, and equity. She also has experience facilitating gender inclusivity workshops for elementary school teachers as part of her work with Gender Inclusivity Awareness (GIA), as well as with youth, HR staff, and other groups. In her spare time, Eve also plays music and hosts Tranzistor Radio, a monthly trans talk show on CKUT 90.3FM.

Crystal Marchand is a researcher with a background in Biology and Teaching & Learning, and expertise in writing, editing, and project management. She conceived the recently-launched Gender Inclusivity Awareness (GIA), a nonprofit organization leading an initiative to build inclusive school environments by providing a platform for community members to address inclusivity concerns while integrating increased awareness of gender diversity and inclusive practices into primary school procedures and curricula. Crystal's work is inspired by her conviction that the introduction of these concepts from the onset of education is the most powerful tool available to curtail discrimination. When she’s not organizing communities, Crystal's primary focus is caregiving for her 3 inspiring children and indulgence of queer monster theory with her prodigious partner.
