An Insight into Criminal Defense Work: Online Crime

Organized by the Criminal Law McGill student club, this highly interesting discussion will focus on the legal framework of online crimes such as possession and distribution of online child pornography. Criminal defence attorneys, Me Harout Haladjian and Me Philipe Knerr, will be giving a presentation explaining the elements of the offences, how police tracks down Internet crimes, how evidence is collected and presented in court, sentencing and the most recent case law on the topic. It will be followed be a Q&A to demystify the profession of a Criminal Defence Attorney.

About the Speakers

Me Haroun Haladjian began his professional career as a Crown prosecutor for the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions, at the Quebec Department of Justice. In 2008, Me Haladjian began working with the Alberta Department of Justice and the Attorney General as a Special Prosecutor for the Internet & Technology Crimes Unit where he became a specialist in the field of online child pornography crimes. He also has extensive experience in teaching lawyers and training police force members in online investigation. Me Haladjian has pled in many judicial districts and before many levels of courts in Quebec, Ontario and Alberta. Me Haladjian is also on the board of directors of The Innocence Project, of the University of Montreal. 

Me Philipe Knerr is a Montreal-based criminal defense attorney who started his professional career at Schurman Longo Grenier where he worked closely with Me Flavia K. Longo - as she then was - who is now a Judge at the Court of Quebec. Most recently, Me Knerr became a Partner at Shadley Bien-Aimé where he represents individuals and corporations charged or investigated for criminal, white-collar criminal or regulatory offences. Me Knerr is also a board member of AADM (Association des avocats de la défense de Montréal).
