Title: Persistence barcodes and Laplace eigenfunctions on surfaces

Abstract: Persistence modules and barcodes provide a framework which can be used to systematically study homologies of sublevel sets of a Morse function on a smooth manifold. We will review basics of the theory and show that the barcode associated to a linear combination of Laplace-Beltrami eigenfunctions on a smooth surface satisfies certain restrictions. Applications to C^0-approximation of a function by linear combinations of Laplace-Beltrami eigenfunctions will also be discussed. The talk is based on a joint work with Iosif Polterovich and Leonid Polterovich.
