Change in nomenclature: Vice-Principal to Vice-President (Research and Innovation)

Published: 15 December 2023

On December 12, 2023, the changes in title for senior leadership positions at McGill from Principal to President and Vice-Principal to Vice-President became official.

On October 5, McGill’s Board of Governors, following consultations with the Senate, approved amendments to the University Statutes to modify the titles. The change was then communicated to the Governor General to comply with the University’s statutory requirements.

The new titles will strengthen McGill’s position internationally, where the titles of President and Vice-President are more recognized. The use of recteur/rectrice and vice-recteur/vice-rectrice in French will also be more consistent with our Quebec and European peers.

Adjustments to titles, unit names, and initiatives

Effective immediately, Martha Crago's title will be Vice-President, Research and Innovation. Other senior leadership team member's titles are also being adjusted to Deputy, Associate or Assistant Vice-President.
