Published: 4 August 2021

Percussionist Charles Chiavato Rambaldo (current BMus) wins First Prize in Marimba as well as the Second Prize in Snare at the International Percussion Youth Competition Belgium 2021 (IPYCB).

The third edition of the IPYCB took place simultaneously with the prestigious Universal Marimba Competition Belgium 2021 and received the High Patronage of Her Majesty Queen Paola — the first royal honour to be presented to a Percussion Competition abroad.

IPYCB 2021 was held entirely online, requiring all percussionists to send their submissions as an unedited video. The IPYCB 2021 jury was comprised of Ludwig Albert, artistic director, Joy Yung-Ping Liu, executive director, Foo Pui Yee, Filippo Lattanzi, Seung Myeong Oh, Sergei Golovko, and Tanasit Siripanichwattana.

IPYCB’s goal is to enhance and to support musically talented youth on the Belgian and international percussion scenes. The competition aims to explore the art of percussion in the disciplines of snare, drum set, marimba, vibes, and xylophone at amateur and pre-University level, focusing on musicality and sonority and the discovery of young percussion talent. First prize wins 50 euro, a full 300-euro scholarship for the Ludwig Albert International Academy in 2022, sponsored products and a laureate diploma.

Born in France, Charles Chiovato Rambaldo’s passion for music grew from his childhood love of Brazilian Batucada. At age 7, he began his formal studies at Conservatoire Lyon under the tutelage of France’s most revered teachers including Raphaëlle Frey-Maibach, Jean-Luc Rimey-Meille, Pierre Rouyer, and Attilio Terlizzi.

After moving to Los Angeles at 16, Charles pursued his studies at the Colburn Music Academy with the renowned orchestral percussionist Ted Atkatz, where he was principal percussionist in the Colburn Youth Orchestra.

Currently in his third year of a Bachelor of Music Performance degree at the Schulich School of Music studying with Fabrice Marandola, Charles has performed with the McGill Symphony Orchestra, McGill Wind Symphony, Schulich Singers, and McGill Percussion Ensemble. His most recent concerts with the Contemporary Ensemble of McGill were directed by Lorraine Vaillancourt in collaboration with CIRMMT. He is expected to graduate in April 2022 with a graduation recital in December 2021.
