Delve: Why Organizations Need Authentic People and Inclusive Policies, with Patricia Hewlin

Published: 7 April 2022

The complex issue of authenticity at work isn’t only about people within an organization—it’s connected to the organization’s own integrity, including policies on equity, diversity, and inclusion. The value of authenticity for employees, customers and clients, and management is linked to a diversity of people and innovative ideas suited to today’s world. Desautels Professor Patricia Hewlin discusses degrees of authenticity at work, how supplier diversity makes an impact on organizations’ goals for equity, diversity and inclusion, and what businesses and other organizations can learn from non-Western nations’ relational approach to authenticity.

“We want an organization to learn, and we want organizations to grow,” says Hewlin. “One of the ways to learn is to receive divergent perspectives. In order to innovate, you want to think differently and come up with better decisions—that's why authenticity is an important component to the conversation of diversity, equity and inclusion.”
