Expert: Female-only spaces

Published: 17 December 2019

Are female-only spaces discriminatory? It was the conversion of an all-female gym into a mixed gym that triggered the debate. This past fall, the Éconofitness Sports Centre in the Old Rosemont borough of Montreal announced that it would admit men as of December 20, 20219. The decision did not suit a segment of the customer base, that has since tried to put pressure on management. (La Presse)

Here is an expert from McGill University that can provide comment on this issue:

Alexandra Ketchum, Faculty Lecturer, Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies

"We do not live in an equal society. It is important that marginalized and oppressed groups have spaces to socialize and organize."

Alexandra Ketchum is a Faculty Lecturer at the Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies. Her doctorate from McGill's Department of History focused on feminist restaurants, cafes, and coffeehouses in the United States and Canada from the 1972-1989.
