Memorandum of Understanding between the CIRM, the Agirre Lehendekaria Center and the Etxepare Basque Institute

 

On April 20th, a study day was held at McGill University under the theme "Culture and Social Innovation Beyond Boundaries: From the Basque Country to Quebec". At the invitation of the CIRM, two seminars followed by a conference by Mr. Juan José Ibarretxe (Director, Agirre Lehendekaria Center) brought together members of the CIRM and members of partner organizations, as well as representatives of the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Agirre Lehendekaria Center with which the CIRM has been working for two years.

 

These three institutions concluded the day with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the aim of encouraging the collaboration and cooperation of their social innovation projects, in the presence of Mr. Bingen Zupiria (Basque Government's Minister of Culture and of the Language Policy), Ms. Irene Larraza (General Director, Etxepare Basque Institute), Juan José Ibarretxe (Director, Agirre Lehendakaria Center for Social and Political Studies) and Mr. Philip Oxhorn (Associate Provost, International, McGill) .


A first interdisciplinary panel titled "Quebec and the Basque Country: Converging Languages ​​and Cultures" and moderated by Erin Hurley (Department of English, McGill / CIRM) brought together Jean-François Leclerc (Director, Centre d'histoire de Montréal), François Lemieux (Québec Cinema), Mary Anne Poutanen (Quebec Studies, McGill / CIRM), Jonathan Rouleau (Art History and Communication Studies, McGill) and Milena Santoro (Department of French and Francophone Studies, Georgetown University / President, Association internationale des études québécoises).


A second panel on the theme of social innovation in Quebec and the Basque Country, titled "Social Innovation in the Basque Country and in Quebec: What? How? When?" and led by Hoi Kong (Faculty of Law, McGill / CIRM), welcomed Gorka Espiau (McConnell Foundation Professor of Practice, CIRM), Richard Gold (Faculty of Law, McGill), Michel Guenet (School of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture, Université de Montreal / CRISES), Julie Rijpens (SILL, Desautels, McGill) and Richard Shearmur (Director, School of Urban Planning, McGill).
