Professor Emerita recognized for work in traditional food systems

Harriet Kuhnlein, PhD, RD, FASN, FIUNS, LLD (honoris causa), Professor Emerita (McGill) was recently recognized with a 2018 Alumni Recognition Award from the Health and Human Development Alumni Society of the Pennsylvania State University.

Dr. Kuhnlein is recognized as an international leader in food systems and nutrition security for Indigenous Peoples in Canada and abroad. Most recently, she was the recipient of the 2017 Fulbright Specialist Grant. As Founding Director of McGill’s internationally recognized Centre for Indigenous Peoples’ Nutrition and Environment (CINE), her unique pioneering expertise has led to the identification, characterization, and preservation of traditional food systems of Indigenous Peoples throughout the world and the growing recognition that these ecosystems are important for their health and well-being.

Notably Dr Kuhnlein has also inspired a new generation of nutrition scientists who are champions of participatory research, indigenous peoples’ nutrition and food security. Her work and influence are truly foundational.
