Ahead of World TB Day, Dr. Madhukar Pai, Professor at the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health and former McGill Global Health Programs Director, co-wrote an op-ed in the Telegraph.
"Nineteen-year-old Thembisa lay on her thin mat in the corner of the bedroom she shared with her three sisters trying with all her might not to cough. The tickle in the back of her throat grew into a slow burning pressure throughout her chest, and her head pounded with the effort of holding it in. But not coughing mattered these days. It mattered very much, in fact, given that her entire community was living in fear of a deadly respiratory infection that was stalking the world. Under these circumstances, a cough could signal the beginning of the end."
