World Hearing Day at the McGill Schulich School of Music: Presentation of the Hearing-Care Platform

Published: 1 March 2019

On the occasion of World Hearing Day (WHD) on March 3, the Schulich School of Music of McGill University, in collaboration with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT), presents the Hearing-Care Platform: A practical and accessible set of tools for the self-assessment of noise exposure, which are particularly aimed at young musicians and youths in general.

As part of the School’s continued efforts to provide a healthy study environment, the Hearing-Care Platform aims to raise awareness about noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and reduce its incidence in the long term by offering technological tools for personalized self-assessment of noise exposure.

March 22 will be a full-day event focusing on core topics aligned with the World Hearing Day mission, as well as other goals set by CIRMMT in collaboration with the Schulich School of Music (McGill), Université du Québec (ÉTS), Université de Montréal (UdeM), and the Association québécoise des orthophonistes et audiologistes (AQOA).

The event will be the first opportunity offered to potential users (youths, young adult musicians, music teachers, audiologists, and the general public) to test the early prototypes of the toolkit components, provide their feedback, and learn more about the WHD message.

The users’ feedback received at this stage of development will help fine-tune the design and the implementation stages of the Hearing-Care Platform’s different components.

This research was made possible in part by funding from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund, awarded to the Healthy Brains for Healthy Lives initiative at McGill University.
